Lions Club of Madurai Temple City is the only all-women club among 89 clubs in districts of Madurai, Dindigul, Theni and Sivagangai. Initially it was operating under the guidance of men, later on it started operating as an individual unit purely made of women from the year 1989 and started working towards the uplift and progress of women.
The members of the club are from different fields and work together to meet the demands of public. They serve their best towards the progress of voiceless women in the lowest end of the society. Age is no bar for their service. Their social activities include seminars, camps, veterinary, AIDS awareness, medical help and time management. They are also conducting classes and competitions for students and women.
So far the club has conducted 38 blood donation camps, 59 camps for general medical checkup and 35 eye screening camps besides their charity works at old age homes. The club has also donated eyes to Aravind Eye Hospital. As a highlighting feature, the secretary of the club has donated her full body to Government Rajaji Hospital after her death. They also provide medico-legal help to women.
